Edmonton Catholic Schools Mental Health Strategic Plan: School Conversation Guides
How can your school implement a whole-school approach to create a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment that supports the positive mental health of students? A whole-school approach recognizes that all aspects of the school community impact students’ mental health and well-being, and that learning and mental health are inextricably linked. Through a strength-based approach, schools can move their focus from the prevention of specific problems to a more positive, holistic view of child and youth development.
The Conversation Guides / Videos will allow you and your school staff the opportunity to further a conversation around how to support student mental health through a comprehensive, strengths based approach.

How can elementary school staff support the development of social emotional learning skills (SEL) in our students?
Key Understandings:
– Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is a process for helping children develop the fundamental skills for life effectiveness. It enhances students’ capacity to integrate skills, attitudes and behaviors to deal effectively and ethically with daily tasks and challenges.
– We want students to develop skills in the following areas: recognizing and handling emotions, developing care and concern for others, making responsible decisions, establishing positive relationships and handling challenging situations effectively.
– SEL programs have shown immediate improvements in mental health, social skills and academic achievement in students.
– Schools can support the SEL skills of students through the instruction of PATHS.
– Schools need to integrate SEL into the fabric of the school and the community, so students can be successful in developing their physical and emotional safety and well-being. By promoting SEL as a schoolwide initiative, it creates a climate and culture conducive to learning.
