Gr. 5-12 Thinking Strategies Placemat
What it is: The Thinking Strategies Placemat provides a visual of 5 key steps in lesson and unit planning that reflects the principles of effective instruction, formative assessment, and literacy, numeracy and competency development.
It was designed to provide an “at-a-glance reminder” of thinking strategies that can be used to increase engagement and deepen understanding at each stage in the lesson/unit.
Who is the target audience: Grade 5 – 12 teachers across all subject areas
Who developed it: This was an initiative of the 2017 ERLC Secondary Literacy Community of Practice. Thank you to the following districts who participated in the development of this Placemat:
Edmonton Public Schools
Northern Gateway Public Schools
Pembina Hills Public Schools
Black Gold Regional Schools
Parkland School Division
St. Thomas Aquinas Regional Catholic School Division
Battle River School Division
How you might incorporate the Thinking Strategies Placemat in your district:
- Print coloured copies of the poster to distribute to schools.
- Share this resource at an upcoming professional learning day in your district.
- Strike up an interested professional learning group who would like to delve into the planning model and try out strategies with their students.
Spring 2018 – Phase Two:
A Thinking Strategies companion resource is in development. This tool will include an explanation of each strategy featured on the Placemat, blank editable strategy templates that can be easily accessed, as well a series of videos showcasing teachers and classrooms where these strategies have been implemented at a variety of grade levels.
In addition to the districts who worked on the Placemat design and are continuing to contribute to the development of the new resource, we are pleased to have the active support of these districts in Phase Two:
Rocky View School District
Foundations For the Future Charter Academy
Golden Hills School District
Calgary Board of Education
